vegetarians?
Just out of curiousity, are there any other vegetarians in this village?
I was an organic vegetarian for 22 months. Im thinking of going back to it. I stopped drinking dairy years ago, permanently. I eat alot of tofu and fish instead of red meat. Organic is hard in DC though.
Yaar, your justification for eating fish makes me feel a whole lot better about the inclusion of fish in my own diet. Like you, I also eat only free range eggs and am only now starting to wean off of dairy products. I love soy milk but haven't yet found a decent brand of soy cheese. Any recommendations?
It's pronounced "sey-tahn," so it sounds a lot like "sheytan," Urdu for Satan. In any case, my mom giggles whenever I say, "I'm having seitan for dinner."
Reagents, the good thing about tofu is that you can add any flavor you want to it. It's a clean slate in the kitchen. They do sell pre-seasoned tofu at the health food store that I frequent. I prefer seitan to tofu though. It is wheat gluten and has a yummy flavor even before it's seasoned.
Umer, no comment. ;)
I was watching the food network and this guy was making home made tofu... it didnt look all that complicated... i was thinking that if he added some flavor during the milking/straining process then tofus would prob not be so blah.
I think vegetarian meals are one of the many good things in the Western culture. I was brought up in Khi and would never even eat cooked vegetables. I was always into meat products. Once I came here, I only wanted to eat halal stuff and in Ohio i.e is a bit rare. So for the longest time I was stuck with fish and you know vegetarian stuff. Took me some time to develop the taste (or lack of it). A yr and a half later, I gave up & started eating meat. Now I eat salads for lunch or a quick snack, but still cannot live without my steak/chicken ..even turkey at times.
Funny thing is that my two best friends are meat and potato girls! I've forced them, tricked them and nagged them to go to my favorite veggie haunts when the three of us go out to eat. They do, however, love sesame medallions! But I do have a couple of friends from college and a colleague friend who are vegetarians; I'm inclined to say that they haven't influenced my decision to become vegetarian but hanging out with them sure does make choosing a place to eat easy!
I just moved to Dallas from Seattle and yes Seattle had more options for me to go vegetarian but now i am in the land of meat and its even harder. I think it really helps if your significant other or if ur friends are vegetarians.
I hear you Reagents. I come from a family that loves their beef (SenorDeny can vouch for that) and, while they respect my choice to go veggie, they still can't really comprehend how someone can give up meat. It's been fairly easy for me since I've never been a big meat eater (I find absolutely nothing appealing about chicken or beef). Meat substitues, such as tempeh, seitan and tofu, are quite delicious---for me they taste even better than the real thing. I also think that location has a lot to do with our eating habits; I'm lucky enough to work in and live across the river from Manhattan, which offers a plethora of veggie options...my favorite happens to be the sesame medallions at Zen Palate.
I actually enjoy eating meat... I wish I was strong enuff to give up my love for chicken or beef. I think it would be nice if we were all vegetarians but then again its the animal instict in us all...
