Voluntary Ghettoization
Immigrant neighbourhoods are a part of most world cities. Are these neighbourhood exclusionary or a method of self-protection or?
i wish i had will power. great things could have happened in my life would i have had it );
come on though, is not like you to be bashful or modest. bring on the xenophobic platoshadow. you know you are king in this village and we won't rat on you
i want to get into this, but i can't think of a way for expressing myself without sounding like a fascist, a social darwinist, a fundamentalist, a racial Supremecist, or a racist xenophobe. or some mixture of the bunch...
so emm...
i'll just tell you all that i did some cardio today,
i hate cardio, but i made myself do it, now that it's done, i'm glad i did it.
I just read an article and it is quite sad. Second generation kids are more fundamentalist than their parents. The same parents are ashamed of their kids fundamentalism.
What happened to normal race relation problems of, "My Beautiful Launderette", fame?
promoting multiculturalism can only go so far. promotion is no good if the society on the other end of it think that it will do them more harm than good. which is sort of the case at the moment. i think a lot of people of our parents generation and even our own are wondering how the heck they have brought up their kids and how they are going to ensure that their values live on...
and when the other society is seen as amoral and promiscuous etc - i dunno.
there is a lack of tolerance and acceptance on both sides
I don't think there is a solution...it just is...a "natural" tendency i guess...maybe promoting multiculturism can counter the effect...but not by much i don't think.
it starts of as self-protection because it is more familiar and people feel safer. but then it becomes more of a ghetto and then it becomes more and more a ghetto until it is exclusive. or perceived as such.
i think 'white flight' exacerbates it too - in the uk when brown people first started coming over, white people didnt like to live next door to brown people so moved out, brown people moved in etc etc. the problem is that here, unfortunately these neighbourhoods tend to be in inner city areas and tend to be associated with higher unemployment, a worse standard or education and more poverty and health problems.
Self protection. A sense of familiarity and comfort is why people from a particular ethnic background stay in the same neighborhood. Sure, everyone goes out to work, but when you come back home, you want to be able to speak in your language, talk about politics with your neighbors, run down to the shop for 'masala' etc etc.
