War of the Worlds

WOW

I saw this on Friday night at Odeon Leicester Square where I must say the sound is superb! At one point it was almost like I could feel Tom Cruise's breath on my neck... (well, the speaker wasn't far away!). The film was a really excellent adaptation. What I found so terrifying is how easily the worlds we build around us can fall to shreds... To see people's homes destroyed, their possessions become useless (like the cars etc) just goes to show how superficial everything is in effect. It was sad to see how easily we can become displaced... the coming of the aliens and the wiping out of neighbourhoods sadly reminded me of Mugabe's regime in Zimbabwe... it's almost as if the 'alien invaders' are already amongst us, sadly.

It's a bit of a shame that Speilburg didn't somehow use Jeff Wayne's musical adaptation of H. G. Well's War of the Worlds which was composed in 1978. I was waiting throughout the whole film for a snippet of it but at the very least expected to hear it when the credits rolled. Slightly disappointing as I think it'd have been a great collaborative addition.

I did actually really enjoy Mr Cruise's performance in this movie, I'd imagine it was a difficult one for him to do.

Salaam Abshaw: Yes, I agree, the human element of the film was a bit too sentimental and slightly lame, but it was extraordinary how the circumstances bought the family together and how the dad (Mr Cruise) was forced to face up to his responsibilities and become 'the protector'... The bit at the end when his son had made it home was totally incredulous and for me, made no sense. It was an unnecessary coating of 'disney magic' to make the film more marketable and commercial and it didnt really match up to the 'spirit' of the rest of the movie, well that's what I thought!

Hey Ramsey, you obviously haven't seen 'The Time Machine' LOL That's just too awful! Even though it starts out with great promise!

another flaw that i found in the ending was this.

In order to wake the tripods, some external force made sure that the lightning goes in the right place with a pin point presicion, how come the same force couldnt protect its own kind when it was without the defence shield, just lame.

I was confused at the ending when the birds were landing on the aliens' tripods, and Tom Cruise pointed them out. Does anyone know what the significance of that was?
