Warm up?

As a rule of thumb, warming up is important but how much warm up is "enough" w/o getting tired so you preseve the energy for the actual work out? My questions:

1) How important is warm up before lifting?

2) More importantly, what'd be good warm ups for various muscles?

3) Warm up before lifting, does not just mean uping the heart beat, does it?

Thanks in advance for any input!

Asif.

Thanks guys. Umair, to answer the question, I was specifically talking about warm up before lifting weights, in other words, for shoulders, bi?s, tri?s, chest, back etc. thanks for the detailed post, that was good. SuperMalik, that?s what I do too and I think I?ll continue :D

If you up the heart beat, then you may run a chance of reduced glycogen for your workouts. Keep warm up simple, streching is the key. Warm up usually means to strech the muscle that your working out completely. 5 Mins should be more then enough. I personally dont warm up, instead; i do my first set with light weights in a controlled manner. That alone is my warm up. But stay on the safe side buddies! STREACH.
