Sheikh Zayed certainly was a great man and many obituaries have been written about him. He is quoted as saying "Arab oil is not dearer than Arab blood."

The (late - RIP 2004) Sheikh Zayed of the UAE (United Arab Emirates) was one of the inimitable Muslim leaders of all time. Although not elected through a public election process, he was held in high regard by the locals as well as the expatriates. He transformed the stretch of desert land bordering the arabian sea into one of the most prosperous, modern and progressive Muslim countries in existence today, where people from all walks of life live in harmony and enjoy an extremely high quality of life. As a person who was born and raised in that country (and having lived in over 4 countries including the USA), I can attest to these facts and draw fair comparisons with a few other 3rd- and 1st-world countries.

Arafat lived by double standards all his life. Many people in his own Palestine didn't like him (or his wife). He was gallivanting all over Europe when his people were suffering. He did put the Palestinian problem and issues on the map, but unfortunately used the wrong tactics (hijackings etc). It is very difficult to win friends when using such tactics. I just hope the Palestinians take the chance that they have now, instead of shooting themselves in the foot. The new leadership already has problems and there are allegations of widespread corruption. Let?s hope they see some sense. The last thing they need is internal fighting.
