Weights or Aerobic Activity First for Women?

I have spoken with several trainers and some have said--

1) Do aerobic exercise first with less resistance but high speed to get your heart rate up. And then lift low weights (lets say for arms for ladies 5 to 8 pounds) with more repetitions and sets. (15 to 2 reps and about 4-5 sets) This I was told will make you lose weight and be more lean tone

2) Some say do weights first and then aerobic workout. And that you should use higher resistance and weight.

So what works for loosing weight and toning? Should women be using lighter weights and more reps? In aerobic exercise, should we not raise the resistance up high but do a higher speed to raise heart rate or keep the resistance high? Aerobics first or weights first?

Keep it to about 10 reps per set. Grab a weight that you can handle ten reps. A mix of cardio and conditioning excercises will help you lose fat and tone at the same time.

Wierd that your "trainers" didnt suggest that you split up your aerobic and anerobic excercises on different days or do aerobics in the morning on an empty stomach and anerobic in the evening.

Females usually dont need to do much weights. A good diet accompanied by a good cardio routine is all thats really needed to shape up and lose that naan-belly.

I work at a strictly women's gym. I've tried both approaches and I found that the order is completely dependant on the person. Some of my clients perform their weight training with more success after a half hour cardio session, some get too tired if they do and others like myself do my cardio training first thing in the morning then I do my weights later on in the day or night. You really have to find what works for you. Whatever is it, make sure it's fun and variety is the key...that way you'll stick to it! Change your program every six weeks, this forces your body to respond to differnt stimuli.

Meow: How about this 10 mins eliptical, 10 on the bike, 10 on the treadmill (fast walk)? I think those are less imact/bounce cardio activites.

I can't run/jog as the girls don't find it comfortable, even with good support. I don't like the treadmill for cardio...it's too boring, and again, I can't run or jog on it.

A friend was telling me that her sister would go up to her room and jog in one spot for half an hour...every day. I guess that way you don't come up with excuses about the weather outside!

Consistency is good, it's just that I tend to get bored after doing the same thing for a month.

the most important thing is to do whatever u do consistently---when uv hit the one year mark pat yourself on the back, and you'll undoubtedly notice lots of changes...in general i try to run three milesish every other day..and get in at least two strength training workouts a week...i'v also cut out (gradually) most artificial sources of sugar from my diet (except for sugar in my coffee)..and i like the results so i think im gonna keep at this version of my program.

My trainer prefers that I do cardio for about 40 minutes after our strength training, but at a steady pace...nothing too intense. Supposedly burn more calories doing cardio after weights. Supposedly. Who knows.

ok this may sound weird but do what you LEAST like first. Say you like going to step class, make sure you do weights BEFORE class b/c you are less likely do to them afterwards and think "ok I worked out now I can go home." That's what happens to me. So I do my eliptical trainer first (15 mins max --yes, I should be doing more) then hit a pilates or yoga class (thing thing I like to do).

So your trainer is always mixing up the order? Cause I mix up exercises for freeweights as well as aerobic machines/routines.

My trainer is always mixing up my program, so that my body doesn't get used to the same old, same old.

You'll find that depending on who you ask, you'll hear for and against each approach....one may work for you or it may not as our bodies are all different.
