Ugliness aside, its not as underpowered as you might think. The 3.0 is pretty peppy. My wife and I test drove both the 3.0 and the 2.5 when we were thinking of replacing our E46. The 2.5 is dog slow. The 3.0 is quite alright. Rattles like a 10 year old car though and the ride is brutal . More brutal than a FX45.
I hate to say this but you cannot get an X5 for a few thousand more than the X3. When we priced the X3, it came to a tad over $44K. The X5 was around $65K plus tax ofcourse. The X5 3.0 is really not an X5 in my book and thats all I'll say.
The X3 and X5 3.0 are for posers IMHO.
To clarify the wife comment, I just meant that it is kind of cute for a guy (think convertible VW Bug). It makes sense for them to compete with the RX330, but I don't recommend it unless you really want a BMW SAV and just don't want to pay for an X5. I would almost (cringe!!!) recommend that you get an ML before you get an X3.
I am driving an X3 loaner right now while they work on my X5. It is kind of zippy and rides OK, but I miss my ride. It's more of something that I would get for my wife than anything else.
