i am self taught, and the method i found best was to get a song in it's entirety, be it in tabs form or guitar chords, and take it from there. start with something simple like...my first tune was 'ticket to ride' by the beatles.

I just started learning electric guitor. I think it's good to have a tutor initially to learn the basics and chord. I am also learning from this book called "The New Complete Guitarist" by Richard Chapman, which is awesome.

keep it fun, get tabs for your favorite songs and play those

I picked up by learning from friends/family... is the best way to start in my opinion. Then when you grasp the basics you can move on to books/magazines and maybe even get a tutor.
