What is your favorite dish?
I've being asking this question to all the arabs I know, I am working on a porject to make the first Arab fastfood resturant..so yala list your favorite dishes:)
I think shawerma is probably the "arab fast food" (in terms of bad health ramifications and fast service). So I think you should concentrate on that fadi :).
and while we are talking about fast food places in Damascus, there is this small falalfel place near dammer and pollo (can't remember the name). It serves the most awesome falalfel sandwishes I have ever eaten. I don't know if any of you have been there.
oh, and there is booz al-jidi place in al-sha3alan too. It has some of the best and cheapest fettah! *sniff* I miss Damascus.... :(
Wow, we have a SOJOQ recipe too! Donia, yeah that ashqawan place is in Sha3lan, they are next to a book stand on the corner before you cross to Al-7amrah Street. Yummy, I had some (a lot) in winter when I was visiting there. I think it is called Fern alsha3lan. Nidal, sorry it is called Sojoq in Pali, I will make sure to use both accents next time.
1 pound finely ground lean beef
1 (14-oz) can whole tomatoes, drained and crushed
1/2 medium yellow onion, peeled and finely chopped
1/2 medium green bell pepper, cored and finely chopped
1 teaspoon peeled and minced garlic
1/4 cup finely chopped parsley
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh mint leaves
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 pinch cayenne pepper
it is originally an aremenian dish nidal, but alot of Arabs serve it at sandwich stands along with shawirma and pasturma, and martadila(beef belogna) I used to call mastradela...marto-la-dodela when I was a kid:)
Wow T3mah you reminded me of the good old days when I and my friends used to hang out in sha3lan and buy these mana2esh and the 2ash2awan sesame pies.I forgot the place's name that used to make them in sha3lan but the pies taste is unforgetable yummmy (H)
ma2dos z made out of pickeld baby eggplant stuffed w/nuts?? nothin to do w/yogurt or meat or bread!!! what ur talking about z called...ummm..whats the name!! i'll ask my mom and i'll get back to u on that...
I wish the little Sijiq stand in Sal7eh, Damascus will be an option istead of the Falafel one(s)! That resturant serves the best Sijiq sandwiches with 3ayran (yogurt). Also, you can add sesame cheese pies or spinach pies, or Mana2esh.
Mmmmmmmmmm Ma2dous... I had it once at my buddies house... they are Syrian... it had bread at the bottom, meet and yogurt and all of that other good stuff.... you guys made me so hungry.... that was probably one of the best dishes I have ever had.
The problem with Arabic food is that it is so good and such an art to prepare, it wouldn't make good business sense....as you can't serve in the quality you want in a fast food restaurant.... We have classy food that can only be served at fine-dinning restaurants...
Fadi, if you want to open a business related to Arabs, here is an idea: Open a male only chest waxing clinic..lolllllllllllllllllllllllll
Nidal I thought u were talking about makdous, which is eggplants stuffed with hazelnutts or pekans, my mom is from sham so she makes this dish called imnazaly be aswad, and fatet makdous, so maybe it is the same thing:)
Hey Falafel people,Iliked Omar's comment on falafel :)
I don't think that any good authentic Arabic dish will be a good choice for a fast food restaurant.
Shaikh el mi7shi is my favorite ;)
It's stuffed zucchini cooked in yogurt.
Omar palis calls grapevines dalia so dawali is the plural of dalia, so warak dawali is grape leaves, I think that's a good idea, dola is such a presentable dish it can be served with laban or tobasco, or mayo or masturd:) falafel is already on the menu we will name it falafel and between brackets put veggie burger:), how about your call your sis ibteesamto al sahel al gharbi to ask her if she can send us the mosaleeya koba..since yo momma is from mosul:)
Please Fadi, what ever you do, do not open another falafel joint... every time I meet non-arabs, they all think we love falafel to death... and eat nothing but falafel.... Where does the name Falafel come from?
Its hard to pick a favorite dish, but I would have to say Dolma (rice rapped in grape leafs - dolmath in Greek!), I think you know what I'm talking about....
But what I love more is sushiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm sushiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii :)
Wait, I don't think you can make dawali fast food...i mean, all you would get is like 10 dawali wrapped in aluminum foil and a drink...that's already like $4.00...and what the hell do you even eat with dawali anyway..YOGURT? AS A SIDE DISH? That's just wrong.
