What kinda oil do you use.


Sup,

what kinda oil do you guys use, dont talk about bulk oil its all recycled stuff. I think Castrol is pretty good, has a good metal bounding formula and doesn?t get burn as fast as others. Plus good for 4 cycl.

Lemme know abt ur grease?

Well, in high revving engines the manual transmission does get a vigorous workout, particularly the synchro between the gears. Premature-wear results. Of-course rev-matching may help, but that's a rather objective issue all unto itself. My point below was that there should've been more advances in oils/lubes for the transmission over the past 100 or so years.

Inthamix, verey rarely does a tranny fluid cause a failure, the temps are far lower, there are no byproducts (ie as in combustion particulates) like in motor oils and there is less friction and less need for overall lubrication as compared to motor oils. However, if you take your fluids seriously, Redline and Amsoil make the best synthetic tranny/gear fluids and substantially exceed most stock specs...their syncromesh equivalents are top notch.....Fisaw, synthetics are geared/designed for long drain intervals and/or high performance applications as in racing where high revs, high oil temps and g loading affects oil circulation..and most people just arent taking advantage of its capabilities...

what exactly is "taking full advantage"? running the oil really hot? doesn't normal city driving manage that (at least NYC driving)?

Drivetrain (transmission) failures scare me more than the motor/engine. I wish advancements in synchro-mesh oils was on par w/ the amount of effort put into engine oils!

I find it amusing that people use synthetic or race oils(amsoil) on their street cars where they never take full advantage of the technology. I guess is it's your money, do what you want....

Any one used lucas additive...btw never use synthetic oil in old engine( 150+ km ) , u will get oil leaks cuz synthetic oil is thin (fine) it will slip through cracks...but if u r using it from the start dat different story.

You dont need the more expensive oil unless you plan to go over 6000 miles before draining the oil. The expensive oil is usually reserved for high performance engines built to tight tolerances and/or people whom drive for extended periods before draining the oil. There is also a new high mileage car formula but Honda has high quality rings on their pistons, so you that wont really do anything for you. Also as a engine wears, it consumes even more oil and the more expensive (synthetic)oils just find their way out of your engine, so just stick to the regular stuff..The best commercially available petroleum based oil is probably Castrol GTX. Valvoline and Mobil are good too..

Gt, I assume you're referring to your Accord. You should be fine w/ the 10W30 that I assume you're using. Generally w/ higher mileage cars, a heavier weight oil is suggested (which isn't more expensive); but 105k on the Accord is nothing as that car's is capable of over +250-300k miles w/ proper maint/serv done over the years. You don't need expensive/"synthetic" oil if you don't want to use it at this stage.

Well like distinguished i use valvoline or castrol, or Mobil which ever is the cheapest when i buy it, one of my cars requires mobil 1 per factory spec. But in my findings, Castrol Syntec actually has a better additive package then Mobil 1 when it comes to long term drain intervals.... and its regular petroleum based oil(GTX) is the best out of the petroleum based oils in terms of viscosity retention and wear. Amsoil is supposedly the best synthetic performer and they do have oil test data to support their claims...do a google on it. As to Grease, I like Redline. Ive used their assembly grease when i rebuilt an engine and it saved my butt as my oil pump wasnt turning and prevented excessive galling..
