What would you do..

If you quit your job as a teacher and embark in another type of career. What job would you choose?

I realized after 13 years of teaching, I can't do anything else that can generate me income.

But how do one find job in technical writing? Free lance if possible. I am pretty good with softwares but then for the life of me.. can't really write well and clearly and I'm very long winded. It comes after years teaching in special ed. Technical writing would be something my husband can go into if he and I combine forces.

I agree, technical writing is quite lucrative... for myself though, I like being around the kids and teachers. Where else can a fool around, be serious act like a kid and a teacher at the same time and get time off during the year! The salary can be helped by getting your masters and/or PhD and after that you also can pusue many other options.

If I did leave however, it may be for graphic design or architecture. This use to be my passion but slowly I became disenchanted by the material lure of it. Perhaps the closest I will come to leaving teacher would be to simply seek a position elsehwere in another country...oh what fun!

Salaam P2u, and hey.. don't tell me you don't know this already. Buzzaz said it earlier, and I'm repeating: Technical Writing is _lucrative_!! Just take a course (and learn FrameMaker by Adobe) and you're good to go. There are gigs that regularly start at $60 an hour, (or more as you gain more experience.) That translates to $120K per year. I don't even work throughout the year.

You are like my sister, she wants to do something else but teaching is something she is really good at. I honestly can't say what type of job I would go into if I quit teaching. everything else seems so boring :( I do like writing but I doubt their is much money in that.

Peace

The thing with teaching is once you get into the system there are many other opportunities. Guidance counselling is interesting and I am going to pursue that in the future. There adminstration opportunites as well. As a teacher I would think if you decided to leave you would probably go into another caring person orientated profession.

I may end up teaching in a special school again but this time specifically on computers. Hopefully, a bit more challenging.

Technical Writing. It pays far better than teaching possibly can, and the experience goes naturally towards the new career..

I recommend grad schools

grad schools love a student who can bring experience ---- they'll also deeply respect your teaching backround

look into business school, for example

just being around that new environment will open up new doors --- meeting new people will also do the same ---- from there, new opportunities will arise by themselves - good luck!

Frankly I have enough of teaching. Just that switching is really really hard. It's the mindset of working full time. Not being able to enjoy the holidays that teachers have .. okie.. a lot of it has to do with the holidays... Okie..what job can I go to that gives you three months holidays in a year? Anyone?
