What's different about the Midwest?

Assalamu Alaikum and Eid Mubarak All :)

I have been in Kansas for a few days for work and I prayed Eid prayer here, and I noticed something interestingly different here which is that there is a high number of converts that attend the masjid, specifically caucasian sisters. In california where I'm from we sure have them but for some reason they either don't go much to the Masjid or they're not as many in numbers.. but here it was really different, i mean almost every other sister was caucasian...

Just wondering if someone has an explanation as to what's different about the midwest.. it's pretty refreshing and the way and that's how it's supposed to be!

Sarabev11: You and I should meet up sometime insh'allah. It's cool too that we're both in HR...maybe we can share HR tips! (A)

I'm also a white convert from Kansas City. There were many converts at my old masjid, and everyone was so friendly and helpful. I think the reason for the high white convert population is because the majority of the overall population is white. I really miss the community in KC because everyone came together of all different ethnicities. A year ago I moved to Northern NJ, just a few miles from NYC. The community here is so large, yet we are very segregated. Everyone seems to stick with their own ethnicity, and it's really hard to find a masjid that is not mainly one race. It leaves me with an empty feeling inside, missing the diversity and unity of the Ummah.

I know Shahzelle, I am not the "get up in front of a lot of people and lecture" type of person. I would probably faint in all honesty haha. But I have been asked to get up in front of a large audience and give speeches and have Q& A sessions. Unfortunately, I know I wouldnt do so well at these things, and had to refuse despite a number of people wanting me too. :(

ahmad I can understand the way you feel...but there is no need to stand up and give lectures you should be able to just talk to ppl about things and ....anyone needing dawah will start asking Q themselves first...

I believe the prophet Pbuh said that shyness comes from faith but it can be workeda-round/overcome (with keeping the faith of course (A) by just practise...

I think Shahzelle is correct. This area of the country isnt as caught up in the fitnah as the coasts are. Mainly because, like I said, its the Bible Belt. I could only imagine what would happen if we had active Dawah here in the Midwest. I wish I could do more to help this cause, but unfortunately I am terribly shy and hate being in front of more than 2 people at a time to speak to people. I get nervous and cant think straight lol. It has taken me forever just to be able to lead prayers, I get so nervous. I should memorize what Musa said to ask Allah SWT to help him with his words/speech.

thankz for the je......I think its because people there are more religious and reflective so maybe Islamic perspective connects the whole thing for them....anyways its a good omen

Assalamu Alaikum Ahmad Cat,

That makes sense thanks bro, it could pretty much be the bible belt. I was in Wichita visiting WSU for some work project and I prayed Eid at the Islamic Society of Wichita, masha-Allah nice people. Insha-Allah if I go there again in a few weeks I'll let you know so we can hang out.

take care

Walaikumsalam wr wb, and Eid Mubarak to you as well. I live in Kansas City bro, and we have alot of Caucasian converting sisters, mashAllah. Anyways, I am not sure how you can explain it. I wish I could say it is because of the massive dawah campaigns, but unfortunately we dont have as many people active in the community for dawah as we should. Anyways, I think alot of it has to do with this area of the country being the "bible belt" and much like myself, these girls have grown up believing in Allah SWT but not completely agreeing with Christianity, and one day they found the message of Islam. Usually from boys/girls in the community interacting with them they find Islam much like I did, I guess. We had a few brothers and sisters at the Masjid asking about Islam after Eid prayer MashAllah, I directed them to people of more knowledge than myself, so inshAllah ta'ala they will find the Truth they seek in Islam. Out of curiousity, were you in KC? Wichita?
