A family friend just had a baby boy last week and the baby is almost a week still without a name. There are many discussions around what the boy should be named, should it be a religious name, it should be easy to pronounce etc? My question is when parents have a full nine months to decide on names why do they wait till the baby is born and wait days upon days to name the child. I myself was a no name product for three weeks and it just doesn't make sense to me. What are your thoughts on this? What is your favourite name? Should one chose a name on the basis of meaning, sound, pronunciation?

Meaning is the most important. The prophet (saw) said we should give our children good names (with good meanings).

For me meaning is important. There will always be some people who won't be able to pronounce some names and always be some people who would come up with a way to pick on you for one thing or another. Even if you take all the precautions against that, how do you ensure somebody won't come up with a weird concoction of your name? If you don't call them Osama today because they would be picked on at school and name him lets say 'usman', who knows Osama might be history by the time the child starts going to school and somebody by the name 'usman' might have emerged as a new terrorist figure :)

Pick a name with a good meaning. At the same time find a name that would be easy to pronounicate.

my name, Bathool, is persian as well so ive been told. It means pure. It was one of the Prophets daughters name.

i'm not sure if mine is an islamic name. i've been told shamina is a persian name.

redhead as far as i have heard and read we will be called by our mothers name on the day of judgement. I could be wrong, but thats what impression im under.
My favourite guy names are Kazim and Jaffer and favourite girls names are Waufa, Zainab and Syeda. I like a whole bunch more too but those names really stick with me. I want to name a child mostly on the meaning of the name and the note about a child being picked on of course should be a consideration as well.

Makes me feel special sometimes. But not when a Westerner butchers it.

my name confuses me, I don't know where it is from or what it means. The Sha of Iran has Reza in his name but i don't know what it means. Probably one of these made up ones. I don't know anyone else with it.

You should just choose a good solid name with a nice meaning.
But most of all choose a name that the child won't be picked on for having. for instance someone i know called their baby Osama! I mean what were they thinking? They Live in the UK so the child is bound to be picked on throughout life. I think its just cruel!!
