When will people learn???

So, I'm teaching Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" to my eleventh graders and I've never actually read this play since I always teach "Death of a Salesman". Anyways, I'm reading it for the first time and it's so good I actually go home and read it there. I was soooooo frustrated because I'm reading this play and the people are so ignorant to actually believe in witches and witchcraft that innocent people die for no reason.

So, you're wondering my point in all this? Miller continually comments that people now and people in 1692 have not changed much. And this is so true. People haven't changed, and a lot of them live in ignorance believing in things as ineffectual as witches. Walking into WalMart with my mom who is wearing her hijab and suddenly everyone's eyes are on us because we are different. Iraq was invaded because of weapons of mass destruction when they found no such thing.

The U.S. was founded on ignorance and fear. That's what the Salem Witch Trials were, mass hysteria....what's changed since then? Sadly, nothing. Instead of learning from the past people, humanity repeatedly makes the same mistakes.

The change has to start with us, the Arabs. Why do we divide ourselves into Palestinian, Syrian, Lebanese, Jordanian, Egyptian? We are Arab, yes, but we are people first. Let us teach the world what humanity is by setting the example for all of mankind.
