Where are all the poor Desis?


Are there any "poor" Desis out there....Desis whose families/parents are not well-off at all? If there are any of you out there, please let me know...I feel like I am the only poor Desi on the planet....And I do not count the "poor student" whose parents are paying for him or her to live on a college campus.....

I'm poor brown trash...I am poor and single, and my parents do not make much money either...my married brother makes a lot of money but does not share any of it with the rest of us. I get nervous spending money on a foot long sub at subway, or filling up my gas tank completely instead of just half way. I hesitate to buy cleaning supplies for the house, such as a broom. I would love to be able to eat at a restaurant that is fancier than IHOP or Dennys, or buy a new shirt for the summer season. I am grateful for what I have (automobile, mobile phone) but I feel like I am in another financial and monetary world than the other Desis who reside in the suburbs of Chicago.

i was beginning to wonder the same question too paradise, but then i realized that even though my car is a candidate for pimp my ride, i'm pretty well off. if you put the question into the context of, are there any poor muslims out there, then well you have about a few hundred million all over the world, so we "poor" people shouldn't feel all that alone.

The guys selling phonecards in my family's neighbourhood are Iraq-kurds, asylum seekers (fleeing American persecution I suppose).

Platoshawdow, you're not a poor Desi...you're a poor Arab. There is still a shortage of poor Desis. If a Desi is poor, then his parents are rich. If the parents are poor, then the son-daughter is rich. The completely poor nuclear Desi family is a rarity, very hard to come by...

are we competing for most improvished? i buy bags of chicken breast and chicken theighs and they have to feed me for about 2 weeks each... it's almost all i eat (that and jello and fiber 1 cereal) i can go weeks without eating anything otehr than that at home. at work i get my resident to pay for my food (they get free food cards, i don't) so that give me some veriety.

Amirlondon, what you said about how you "came from a very priveledged background and had everything I could ask for when I was young...then we lost it all".....that is exactly my story also! We were living in a really nice house in the suburbs of Chicago....it had 4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, one half bath, two "living rooms", etc, etc. Then when my parents got divorced, about 11 years ago, that is how "all of us" became "poor." So I can relate to you. I even went to a private Catholic school here in the Chicago suburbs for 2 years! So I definitely know what it is like to have been rich once and then lose it all. But now, for over 11 years, I have been middle-class, or compared to other DESIS, lower-middle-class. My ex husband was also a broke-a** mo'fo'. So I have forgotten what it is like to be upper middle class.

Paradise: thats awesome that you got plenty of grants, Mashallah :) I wish I had gotten some more grants but I am happy that I got a good education. No regrets :) Confusedfella: Thanks for your comment :)

Paradise: Most of financial analyst in the last 6 years are being paid through commission. And the reason why, because the public DO NOT want to invest in this market. So it has become hard for the analyst to sell anything to the public...so I highly doubt that your cousin makes 55K. Even the IT consultants make about 45K starting out who have talent. Think about all the jobs being outsourced to other countries. Think logically, if you had a company, wouldnt you hire 2 people for the cost of one here in the US in another country so that way your company doesnt lose money?? Heck I would. Why would I hire anyone here? That is why its harder for desis to get jobs here unless you have a Greencard or you are a citizen. As a citizen I dont agree with outsourcing but in the long run, its good for our economy. I went to a great school, paid 120K for my education and still paying, didnt have a job when I got out of college for 4 months, then landed a job, got laid off for 6 months, found another job and have been in it since then...and mind you, I had many internships through out college and have a great resume, then how is it possible that any company would pay someone without experience 55K? It doesnt make sense, right? I personally dont believe a word what anyone says these days. And I personally never ask anyone's salary and wouldnt like it if someone ask me because its not anyone's concern. But if someone voluntarily told me their salary, I still wouldnt believe them, you know what I mean? Yeah people love to fabricate lies so they look good...pretty sad.

ManasanaM: didn't America Beauty cover the DILF concept? ... msIndep: Hypothetical? You haven't made up your mind? hmmmm, indepedent, yet dependant (on a sugar daddy)? ... Stajani is correct, talking bullsh*t is popular amongst pakis (US or UK based) when it comes to telling others how much money they have ... I am a lucky person to have had a complete mother-son relationship dynamic.

Stajani, I also worked throughout all four years of collge. I did not live on campus, I commuted, taking the train. I was elligible for financial aid, even grants that I didn't have to pay back, cause of my poverty level.

MsIndependent, I totally agree with what you said about how "the first 5-6 yrs of a child are the MOST important and i want to be able to spend that time with my child." That is my plan. I am NOT working until my child is old enough to go to kindergarten. F*** baby-sitters and daycare centers! The only person I will leave my child with will be either my mother or my future husband's mother. Stajani, I hope what you said about how people like to lie a lot in our (Desi) community is correct. My cousin's friend graduated from a really good university with a Bachelors degree in finance, I think. By the way, she comes from a rich family (her parents paid for her tuition at a very expensive school, they have a huge house, etc). She had never had a job in her life. After she got her bachelors degree, the first job she got, as a financial advisor, she told my cousin she is making $55,000 a year! (And she is only 23.) What I am very curious about is, what exactly did she put on her resume, if she had no work experience, and a bachelors degree in finance? How come her resume was soooooo damn impressive that a company hired her on the spot, fresh out of college, no experience, and are paying her $55K? It just doesn't make sense. She must have been lying to my cousin. She is probably making only about $35K.

Glucose grandpa (GG)......wherefort art though GG? have u guys noticed how there is such thing as a MILF, but we never hear of a DILF? i guess it's cuz it's not unnatural for a woman to marry or court a man old enough to be her father..........b/c men that old usually have alot of riches to offer. but, if we use that argument, then a MILF could theoretically be rich enough for her teenage/ 20-something boyfriend to use her.

Paradise: let me explain something to you..people like to lie a lot in our community esp. with how much money you make. Believe me, people who you are talking about who are 22 just graduated and have no experience probably make some where b/w 30-40K. Do you have any idea how tough the job market is? There is a hiring freeze going on everywhere, they are hiring only experienced people and no one in their right state of mind would ever hire a fresh graduate with no experience and pay them 60K. Believe me on this one. I have lived through it and i know...Also people love to make stories, cause they feel that they have to lie to be accepted in our desi community. Its sad but true. In my college, people with no status, would say, oh I am making 90K even though I dont have any experience...I highly doubt that. Besides in America, its very very hard for desis who are not citizens to get jobs...so dont believe everything you say. Even when they drive big fat cars, its because they probably dont eat at all, and drive their car to show off...
