where does your soul live?
There was a tv programme on last night, which I didn't watch. It was about an Egyptian baby who had a rare condition known as craniopagus parasiticus, which occurs when an embryo begins to split into identical twins but fails to complete the process. One of the conjoined twins fails to develop fully in the womb.
In this case, the baby had two heads - one of which the scientists said was parasitic and so they removed it - after having consulted the Mufti of Cairo who said that it was ok to do so. The head attached to the body baby survived.
The head they removed had a brain - and it was capable of smiling and emotion. But not surviving by itself because it didn't have a heart or anything else apart from the brain.
But because it had a brain, I would say that it was capable of feeling.
Where does the soul live? Is it in our brain? Our heart? Where?

hopefully she's keeping it in a safe place. but i haven't seen her for months so it's hard to tell.
I think a soul would be a whole is greater than sum of parts deal.

I made a mistake back then, and am now paying the price.
Seriously though, I have no idea. There must be recycling at work in the Universe (that is if something as ephemeral as the concept of a soul even obeys the laws of physics) and the energy which was the life force is recycled into matter. And comes back in leaves, soil etc
Or alternatively, maybe that is what Heaven is - a place fizzing with energy through the collection of souls there?
I don't believe that consciousness is self-awareness. There's a separate word for that in the physical (yet totally subconscious sense): proprioception. But I don't know what consciousness is - the crackling of electricity being fired in between synapses at a physical level but more than that...?
As for our soul, I would suggest that it is the 'spark' or 'life force' which you also refer to as the 'essence of life'. As such it is really a type of energy, as opposed to a physical component of our bodies.
Take a body a second before death and a second after death. It will still weigh the same and even look the same. I would suggest to you that all that has changed is that the soul, or the 'life energy' is now absent.
Now, we know that energy can not be destroyed. So when a person dies, their soul can not 'die' too. The only possible conclusion is that it must go somewhere else.
Where does it go?
Having spoken to others about it, they seemed to take the 'killing' of the baby with equaninamity and just called it a 'parasite' - which to me, belittled the instrinsic humanity of the second 'head'.
Consciousness resides in the brain but is consciousness the same as the soul? I don't know. And if the soul is the 'essence of life' then it would reside in someone brain dead.
I know I'm not making much sense here but I'm thinking it through myself, which is why I'm a muddle.
If two babies are born conjoined and are unlikely to survive, is it only to seperate them so that they weaker one will die and the stronger one will survive?
We can all agree that the weaker baby was 'killed' but was that 'killing' wrong?
As for the soul lying in the brain, I am not sure that that's the case. A person could be brain dead. Does that mean they don't have a soul? If they do have a soul, it would suggest that the soul does not need a living brain to exist.
Having thought about it some more, I realise that I wasn't clear at all. Some may say taht I have moved the goal posts of the discussion but I think it's clarification.
The brain gives us consciousness and feeling. Therefore, destroying this other 'head' was akin to killing someone - because it is the brain that makes us unique and gives us our senses. Our brain that creates the outside world for us and is a link to it. Is there even a world outside that which our brain creates?
as humans before birth, we are in a continual state of development. I think the soul does not "reside" anywhere, but rather is the philosophical principle that guides the process of our development - so it is impossible to "cut off" a soul

If you cut off an arm of a starfish, not only with the starfish grow a new arm, but the arm will grow a new starfish.
This would suggest that, like the baby, the soul does not reside in just one part of a living being.
