men may have more responsibility but i believe women have equal. The next generation lays at the hands of women. If the mother is not sensible then her children have greater chances of growing up the same as her. The child spends more time with the mother then the father. The mother has more contact then the father with the child as the father spends time outside of the home. The mother builds the foundation the childs foundation and that is a large responsibility. If the woman is not sensible and creates cracks in the foundation of her child then generations to come can be affected. My mother always says that one illiterate/irresponsible woman has the power to ruin the next seven generations. Men have to provide the food the children eat but woman have to feed the children through basic knowledge, manners, etiquette, the basics of being a good human being. Islam doesnt just say that a woman has to obey her husband. It says that it is a reciprocal relationship. A wife obeys the husband and husband obeys the wife, that is where cooperation and compromise come into play. A womans repsonsibilties are different then the mans but that doesnt mean they are not equal. Each man and woman have a special place in islam and we cannot say which is the more difficult gender.

My intent was not for this to become a battle of the sexes but just for everyone to realize and appreciate the worth of the opposite sex.

My opinion is that if we look at the duties that Allah (swt) has placed on us as muslims, Allah (swt) has placed a great responsibility on the men of our ummah. They carry the weight and responsibility of spreading Islam, protecting the ummah from both within and without, the maintance of their families and those who are in need and etc.,. Now do all this in the society that we live in! They are up against odds everyday. It's not to say that we as women do not face great hurdles, but Allah (swt) has made it easy for us to attain Jannah. All we have to do is obey Allah (swt) and our husbands. How is easy is that??? Sure some men can be a pain but that is our test.

I want to leave this hadith. I really like it because it pinpoints what Allah (swt) intended for us in terms of responsibility

Volume 2, Book 13, Number 18:

Narrated Ibn Umar:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, "All of you are Guardians." Yunis said: Ruzaiq bin Hukaim wrote to Ibn Shihab while I was with him at Wadi-al-Qura saying, "Shall I lead the Jumua prayer?" Ruzaiq was working on the land (i.e farming) and there was a group of Sudanese people and some others with him; Ruzaiq was then the Governor of Aila. Ibn Shihab wrote (to Ruzaiq) ordering him to lead the Jumua prayer and telling him that Salim told him that 'Abdullah bin 'Umar had said, "I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'All of you are guardians and responsible for your wards and the things under your care. The Imam (i.e. ruler) is the guardian of his subjects and is responsible for them and a man is the guardian of his family and is responsible for them. A woman is the guardian of her husband's house and is responsible for it. A servant is the guardian of his master's belongings and is responsible for them.' I thought that he also said, 'A man is the guardian of his father's property and is responsible for it. All of you are guardians and responsible for your wards and the things under your care."

zz - yes, men do age better externally, but u know the "magic wand" shrinks while the "snowballs" get bigger and hang... it is hard to get it up and the butt is all flat and saggy as well. So although men's faces, legs, arms look better, i'm not sure if it means much. both sexes, when old, are saggy, wrinkled and not sexually hot. (am i too harsh?)

my roommate works with Alzheimer's patients and she says the men she takes to the bathroom have snowballs that literally dangle in the toilet bowl! That is NOT graceful aging!

it's just that most of the girls in my class thought it was more difficult being a man both from the religious point of view and social. I had only one girl who thought it was tougher being a woman. What amazed me was they used almost all their english grammar I taught them to debate the issue. :)

women might live longer, but they also age faster !

compare a 30 year old man to a 30 year old woman....except under extenuating circumstances (hollywood actresses etc), the woman will usually look a whole lot older, with more wrinkles !

Its tougher to be male or female it all depends on the cirucmstances...a man feels obligated to earn enough money to give his family a good stabel home...a female is expected to be a good nurturing person...women who dont have or want children are looked down on men who are dont have jobs or have traits that don't match wat a man is supposed to be...women endure child birth which i have heard is the hardest time of a womens life but also the most rewarding..we cant say which is more difficult because life in general is difficult and trying to see who has it worst is unfair..we can say that in this day in age there is more pressure in some parts of the world to be a woman..in western societies where double incomes are needed a woman in pressured with home life and work life...hence the term double day shift...but like i said life is more difficult for all not just one gender.

Lol yes, women definately have it tougher socially, physically and mentally. (i'm talking in general, not abt any individual or extreme cases)
But i LOVE being a woman and wouldn't change it for anything. I revel in my femininity. :)
But this may be because i live in an environment and era where it is not a crime to be a woman.
But still i do think i have it harder than many of my male counterparts.
