Who exactly are Memons?


Salaam. So, who exactly are Memons?

Till about a year back or so, I used to think Memons mean Aga Khanis. But then after I started meeting people at the masjid and then they said they are "Memons", I started to investigate more.

So, are people from Bombay, India or Gujarat, India called Memon? Till two weeks back I did not know that Memoni was a language. What kind of foods do u all eat? What kind of dresses do u all wear? I am interested to find out more.

hey ppl! i guess u can say im half memon, cuz my mom is. my mom doesnt cook their food, but when i went to pak a while ago, i stayed at her cuzins place or her siss place. their food does taste diff. i remember one of their dishes, which ive never tried n never will. its called dokhra, dunno if i spelled it right. but its like soul food, got a bunch of stuff in it from meat to fish n more. i find their language weird but very interesting, i can understand it but i find it hard to speak. kinda weird that i do understand it cuz i dont hear it often.

Because it's my village and I feel dicatorial (not really but I wanted to use the word today), I'd like everyone to please check out some of the other threads. Also I'd like to invite you to make more of your own. This has the potential to be a GREAT memon village, if we all communicate! By the way Hydro. your thread rocks because people are really getting into it, thanks for making it!

For me, the spicier the better. Yeah i am very familiar with Hydro food. I am a fan of most hyrdo food except begari baigan. oh yeah we call raitaa, kachumbar.

OneMozLuv2 (aka Brown Muslim Memon Girl), Do u know how to cook any of those dishes? Maybe u can gimme some recipes or maybe even cook some stuff for me.

Btw, the kid u r holding, in ur pic is cute. Is that ur kid? Can u do ur 'magic' and turn the kid into a beautiful young girl? ;)

I think I need to take Memon101 class. I am already starting to feel that I am getting Memonized. Do Memons eat spicy food? Hydros are a little different from other desis cuz till late 50's or so Hyderabad was its own country (Deccan) and had its own currency. Till this day ppl of Hydro background still hate India and dont want to be associated with Indians even tho they are technically Indians. We have our own food such as Mirchiyo ka saalan, khatti daal, talaawah ghosh, etc. We dont have Faluda or Raitaa in our foods. We call Raitaa Chutney and its little different.
