Why be a teacher??
What made you become a teacher?
When I was in college, I had an English teacher who told us that teaching was an ocupation that should be chosen out of love for teaching not for the salary. He said teachers make peanuts compared to other professions. I now understand what he meant. Teaching doesn't give the salary I would like but my love of teaching children and watching them grow makes up for the little money I make. I think there is so much children need to become healthy and responsible citizens and teachers are one way in of making it happen. Children spend a lot of time at school and with their teachers. And believe it or not, they carry most of it with them when they leave, the good and unfortunately, the bad. I think children today need more good role models in their lives and who better than the folks they have to sit in front of five days a week, 6 or more hours a day ??
Most parents these days spend less time with their children enforcing good values and morals due to the pressures of working to support their families and giving them a good life. Parents need the support of the school and community at large to fill in the gaps. As in the saying...it take only two people to have a child, but it takes a village to raise a child. While I was growing up, my mom worked and taught me at home, she was always there for me, making sure I was always safe, happy and staying out of trouble. She taught me the essentials of life. Infact she was and still is my first teacher.
Outside the home, I had my teachers who also shared the same values my mom had and reinforced them in my school life. I've had a lot of wonderful teachers, muslim and non-muslim, each giving me something to pass on to my own students. I learned from them there was more to teaching than earning a salary. But as teachers, we are giving them what it takes to not only exceed in education but to be good people. I don't think there is another profession which is more noble than teaching, except maybe parenthood :)
Peace
