Why contemplate a long distance relationship

What makes a long distance relationship a more interesting option than a homegrown one.

Is it the allure of the exotic?

Do UK/ US/ eastern men/ women really come across as that much better than their local counterparts?

or are we all suffering from a bad case of 'all men/ women are horrible' and hoping for greener grass elsewhere without realising it..

Been in one before. Important issue with the distance is trust.

Being far away as I was from this person, what made it fall apart was that she couldn't trust me. Felt I would be cheating on her or my parents would have arranged a marriage to someone else. (she was a non-Muslim to begin with and refused to convert if she did marry me)

Ah yes, the communication bonus.. the first time I heard this theory was in a Shania Twain interview (she married her producer after talking to him on the phone for weeks/ months.. met him much later)..

the interviewer was arguing long distance relationships can be dodgy.. she disagreed and said, you can get to know so much about a person by what they have to say, it's a great way to find out who they really are

(i assume she meant.. a person who is being honest.. she hadn't met the mingers we have met..)

hmm i agree... the less time you take to know someone, and the longer the distance you're travelling, the more you could end up relying on this 'connection' generation... ie. it could be a figment of your imagination

how do you tell the difference between a connection born from similarities/ respect/ attraction which has potential and one dreamt up by lonely individuals..

I agree.. but try telling that to a guy...also the loneliness thing is so true, especially in our culture where being on your own isn't seen as an option (maybe there are advantages to this.. as more people contemplate settling down than would otherwise)

good point about proximity, yehbandishain.. is this also unwittingly a good way of keeping things above board/ islamic.. ie. if you both make your intentions clear, and neither of you is messing about, it can lead to the next step being a full time, close quarters relationship (ie. marriage)

ie. not having the opportunity to meet all the time, leading to wanting to see someone full time (aka absence makes the heart grow fonder) :P
