Why do men have to do the proposing?

I didn't go through all the comments so I might be reiterating someone's point, but I think there is a basic code that goes into the X & Y chromosome, and women for one are programmed to be of the 'courtship preference' types. There is nothing wrong with that. Yes society does solidify that but it has to have started somewhere. Women like to be courted and men like to court. Just like men like to tune-out and women like to nag about things that men like to tune-out :-p

Seriously, though, I think it's hard to force a man to do anything remotely related to marriage and commitment. So I've only even just once dropped hints and suggestions until the dumb@ss figured it out and proposed. I should have known better because I'm divorcing that same guy now.

Some girls propose indirectly. Such as, it's not rare for a girl to ASK her man to propose. girls give ultimatums all the time. MARRY ME OR YOU DIEEEE, saala! :p

If women expecting men to propose is a cultural thing .. then it sure to hell is a global culture (other than a remote African tribe). Historically men have done all the wooing .. thats seen across species .. you never see a female peacock dancing around to attract a male peacock .. thats the way it is in nature too ... now the only problem is male animals just get on with it and propose .. whereas male humans are confused and too scared too miss out on greener pastures.

i think it's more about women feeling like they're queens and should be pampered...and it's also about chivalry. it's good when a guy puts in so much effort to the proposal and the whole marriage process, cuz after marriage, it's the women who take all the nakhras from men and reminisce about the good old days before marriage when the guys catered to their every whim.

that is some crazy stuff, kidnapping a girl and then convincing her to marry...i dont see the point or logic in it? aren't you supposed to attract the girl rather than scare her off?...it sure is rare a female asking a guy or even proposing for marriage...

Yeah... well she was saying that is how she got married and her mother got married (if i remember correctly)... I don't know but to me it just seems very barbaric. Well when the communists were controlling the country they banned the practice but apparently it started once again after they left. I guess they did something good for a change.

I can't believe the mother of Fatima in that Frontline episode wanted to have her daughter kidnapped. And that other girl got killed! the sad thing is that the government isn't making an issue of it, what happened to women's rights? I have the right to not be abducted and forced into a marriage with an uneducated goat herder!

Ur right Misssopious... in most cultures women are told to take a back seat while the men do all the asking out and proposing... it would be refreshing to have a girl ask a guy out once in a while... not that it doesn?t happen... its just rare. I was watching this documentary and it showed how the men in Kyrgzistan actually kidnap the girl and bring her to his home where the boy?s family tries to convince her to marry him... now that?s brutal.
