WHY International relief work? Benefits

Everyone in here is b/c we're interested in it. But it might be good to remind each other and other non-groupies of WHY we are.

Is it:
1. to help the underpriveledged
2. to challenge ourselves to practice medicine without all the resources available to us, ie. relying more on history and physical without imaging and fancy technology
3. be altruistic
4. to get to DO a lot more
5. to SEE a lot more, more variety and a different flavor of medical problems, and therefore expand our knowledge of medicine...

Let's talk about all the benefits. (And then we can talk about all the obstacles to doing it later...)

I am doing it for a variety of reasons, and not all may be altruistic. Bottom line is that it makes me feel good and that is reason enough. If each doctor I train saves even one life, then I think the larger purpose of my life is fulfilled. But like I said, that would be a bonus, and hopefully each of those 25 would save more than one life.
