Why Medicine?
A topic for discussion to keep things interesting in this group... :)
As we know we all have had different reasons for going into medicine. It would be nice to share our reasons but more importantly how our impressions of the profession have changed over time. The 'vision' we had of what we wanted to do through the field and the 'reality' of what it has become for us. Any disillusionment? Any second thoughts? Any regrets of not doing something else due to 'family pressures?' And on the flip side, please also share the feelings of fulfillment that one gets from being in this -- one of the best -- professions where you get to help fellow human beings on the most personal of levels and in their most personal of needs. It would be interesting to get different perspectives on all of this.

The 'reality' is when you hear a code blue and rush to the room and see it is one of your patients you just talked to a couple hours before. You can not put words to the emotions and actions that go through when you are pushing on top of that person's chest with every ounce of energy, they die, and you are in a room telling the family what has happened afterwords the next moment. That was my first code during my first rotation in third year at Cook County Hospital (by the way, much tougher to do it on your toes).
For now, I have realized that I must remind myself of that 'vision' because 'reality' can chip away at the purity of our great intentions in this profession.
