"Will You Still Smile?" :)

"I always smile"

"even in the rain?"

"more so in the rain"

"while the water falls down

your forehead, and swims down

your eyes and cheeks,and folds

across your lips to form

tiny drops which fall like..

will you still smile?"

"yes, with wet eyes" she said unaware of

why she said so

"with wet shiny eyes

which sparkle the image of me" he said unaware of

why he said so

And yes! she smiles :)

even today

as the acid rain

produced by the image in her eyes

burns her cheeks

and cuts through her smile

bringing an unwelcome

awareness.

I read a translation of 'za nangyaalay da zamanay khushal khattak yum' which went like 'i am the chivalrous khushal khan khattak' and i was like 'HUH!' I think i hear you when you say how do we translate the culturally ingrained words like Nangyalay. Chivalry is a little part of it , being a nangyalay would mean a lot more than that. A lot has to do with how language communicates the innuendos of a people and culture and since they are different, you don't find the same vocabulary in every language.

With Love to Ghani Baba :)

Lewaniya! What is Eeman (Faith)?

Oh Mullah! It is a strong deep thought
It is dreaming a dream with your heart
of a rendezvous with your Janaan (Beloved)

Oh Maniac! What is Moonz (Namaz, Salat)?
Oh Mullah! It is the kissing of dust
It is visiting the street of your beloved (janaan)
It is becoming a fervour of longing and hope

Oh crazy man! What is Sajda?
Mullah! It is turning yourself into ashes
Its the act of placing a garland of flowers
at the feet of your Love

Lewaniya! What is this meeting with Janaan all about?
Mullah! It is drowning in a sea of beauty
It is dancing on top of stars
It is spreading in the moon

Lewaniya! What is Janaan?
Oh Mullah! The sane ones don?t bother to look
It's only the lunatics who can spot and enjoy
the peaceful shadows underneath His curled eyelashes

( I know it's a nonentity in front of the REAL one but atleast i tried)

Stars!

Small world :) A very pleasant surprise i must say :)
(Shandoor - beauty that should remain hidden from the flagitious eye of ugliness)

And

I thought i was the only one content -analysing Pashto poetry/music these days:)

Have you noticed how utterly brazen pashto poetry is ,even those folk and wedding songs that you talk about- all marked by a flagrant insolent audacity. Just like the People and the Land itself. Like the song you mentioned O Peera and Wachawa lasoona pa ma bande (Wrap your arms around me and let the world go to hell) etc.
And it's so funny we dance to songs that speak of death and tears e.g. Ze che kala mar shama toray jamay wachawa (wear all black when i am dead); Mata janan owaya (Call me Janaan)- it too has a sad note to it. :)

I want a translation of Ghani baba -a lot is lost in translation but then the world needs to know about him and what he said. But i wonder how does one communicate the meaning of words like 'namoos' , 'nang' , 'pakhto'.
