Wisdom of the Idiots...

There were two neighbors; one was an excessive gambler & indulged himself in many vices, the other was a devout Muslim who was always preaching. The very devout man had taken it upon himself to try and "reform" his neighbor by reminding him how many times he had sinned. For every night that he would go out gambling, the devout man would place a stone on his front lawn. More than twenty years had passed and the gambler's front lawn was burried under the stones of sin placed there by the devout neighbor.

The gambler always admired his neighbor's devotion; he was in awe at his timely prayers and numerous attempts to change the gambler's ways. Whenever the gambler passed the neighbor's house, he was thankful that someone was trying to help him even if he didn't listen.

The Day of Judgement was finally upon humanity, and the two neighbors were awaiting their lot. An angel told the gambler to enter the gates of heaven. To which the gambler told the angel, "I believe you have mistaken me for my neighbor. He was the devout one who always prayed and tried many times to change my habits - with no success. I'm not the one who should be in heaven, he should."

The angel of course disagreed with the gambler and told him why.

"You see, you are the one who should be in heaven. Every time you passed the 'devout' Muslim, your heart was filled with good thoughts about him. You admired his habits and wished him well. Your neighbor on the other hand, wanted to show the world just how bad a person you were by exposing your vices by placing a physical reminder on your lawn. When your neighbor passed by your house he never wished you well, he only thought of just how much better he was then you. Arrogance created malice in his heart. That malice consumed him. Arrogance is not rewarded here."

And so the 'devout' Muslim was thrown in hell, while the gambler enjoyed paradise.

there are three groups within Muslims. a) All the actions are based on fear of Allah swt. b) All the actions are based keeping in mind mercy of Allah swt. c) Actions based on both, fear & mercy of Allah swt... And surely, the best of them is c) which is the moderate path.

Taqwa = to be in awe of the wonders and beatitude of Allah.

well, i dont think there's an excessive amount of fear in quranic text.....it just seems like muslims and non-muslims dwell on that more for some reason (both w/ their own motives and reasons for doing so i bet). every surah except 1 starts w/ "in the name of Allah the MOST BENIFICIENT AND MERCIFUL"........so at the least, God's mercy is mentioned 113 times.

but that's just the nit-picking, wanna-be linguist speaking....

The problem is in the translation... fear holds a different connotation than love.... In English you avoid that which you fear, and you are drawn towards that which you love.... Instead of fear, I think the term respect should be used.... People don't offend that which they respect....

To doubt Allah's power/mercy to forgive us or anyone else in the face of when we've sinned is as big a sin as any.

The response was that the word "taqwa" is often mis-translated as meaning fear and that another form of "fear" is loving someone or something so much as to fear offending them. When one's love for Allah is not sufficient to get them to do something, then the fear of losing the favor of Allah (s) should kick in. And if we have still shirked our obligation, then we should have HOPE that we will be forgiven.

I was at a masjid during Ramadaan where they were hosting a discussion and one of the non-Muslims brought up the topic of fear of Allah(S). The person asked why it seemed as though the Qur'anic text was always trying to arouse fear in people? The answer?

im sure that is the case.....life isnt black and white so why would god's judgement be any different.

I am not sure where I heard this, but you are judged based on your circumstances..... for example: the prostiitute who went to heaven b/c she had enough compassion to give a thirsty dog some water....I think children and mentally challenged people would have a different set of standards by which they are judged....not entirely sure - I haven't found out yet - but eventually we all will....

well, the prophets were human and if they got the green light, i would think other humans have the chance. maybe that's where all the babies go? being in limbo implies being concious in a state of waiting doesnt it? if this is the case, i would have to disagree w/ using limbo to describe what happens next. sleeping and not really aware of the time being passed or what's goin for that matter makes more sense to me. i never liked this idea of hearing prophets in different levels even though i mentioned it in my previous comment. cause according to the quran youre not supposed to make distinction among the prophets but how can you not when u hear that one prophet is at a higher level than the others......

i always thought that after death we slept until the Day of Judgement when our Heaven or Hell fate would be decided. so until then we are in a kind of limbo as Manas says.

and yep, in Islam heaven has levels. the Prophet (SAW) is in the 7th heaven. Jesus is on the 4th level (i think).

but it was news to me that some people had a green-light get-there-straightaway-pass to Heaven (or Hell). what are the conditions for that? and where do the children and babies go?

Mahtab, that's very interesting. I always wondered whether everyone is in "limbo" b/w the time of their death and the day of judgment.

here's what i know: little is known about after death. there is something called 'the punishment of the grave'. there is a day of judgement where the whole universe will end. so based on this, i would guess, when u die, you fall asleep in a sense. if you were bad, you'll be punished....almost like a bad and painful dream. when u 'wake' it will the day of judgement. u will then be judged and go to heaven or hell. some people probably go directly to heaven after death. there's a verse in the quran that implies that jesus went straight to heaven (and so most people, is awaiting return to complete his life, to others, he's not coming back). there's also a hadith that during mirage, the prophet (saws) saw all the prophets in the different levels of heaven. if this is the case, then there are people in heaven right now and there is an exception to the rule.

and yes, to my knowledge, in almost all religions, suicide is wrong.
