Women Doctors

OK, to all the Muslim Women out there that are looking to become doctors or already are...do not jump all over me for asking this! I was curious to know why there are so many Sisters that are going into medicine when they will probably have to take some time off in order to raise a fam. This probably just shortly after spending 8 long years in school to become a doc in the first place. Again, please do not take this as commentary. I'm just asking out of curiosity. Is the goal of becoming a doctor enough? Or is practicing medicine part of the game plan?

I feel that having more Muslim women go into Medical school is a great thing in this country as we have many Muslim brothers in the profession. That being said the flip side is practicing Medicine and juggling that with having a family and raising children. Each individual circumstance is different, but quite a few Muslim girls I?ve talked to that are currently in Medical school have the intention of ?working part-time? once they have children and other responsibilities. Now since I?m in the field of Public Accounting my knowledge of ?working part-time? as a Medical Doctor is somewhat limited. How successful can your practice of Medicine be if you are ?working part-time?? And if a Muslim woman decides to take time off from her career of being a Medical Doctor to raise children, then when she intends to come back to her practice then she might not be as up to date as she needs to in order to deal with her patients problems/injuries/concerns etc. It?s a catch-22 and it really depends on the individual Muslim woman and her family situation (i.e., her spouse?s situation/income etc.). Maybe an alternative route could be to go into another related field in medicine...just not Medical School. In my opinion, desi Muslim parents tend to push their children to go into Medical school while totally ruling out other great fields that are linked to Medicine such as Dental School, Podiatry School, Optometry School, and Chiropractic Schooling. All Dentists, Podiatrists, Optometrists, and Chiropractors can put ?Dr.? before their first name (which is THE main reason why desi muslims go into medicine...NOT for the true love and compassion for it) and their practice isn?t nearly as strenuous in terms of the number of hours they put in compared to the traditional Medical Doctor.

What happened to all the women doctors in this village? I can remember a specific villager being quite "bored" by the lack of activity. Sorry...had to shout you out :p

What year law school are you in? Any thoughts on what you are going to do once you graduate? Private or Public sector? Or is there going to be a Nore, LLC anytime soon? ;)

Hi Nore...thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm sure every girl thinks about this when they are trying to figure out what career to choose. But, out of all the professions, it's my understanding that being a doctor is probably the least flexible in that you have to work on site. As a consultant or lawyer (to some extent), we at least have the ability to work from home right? That's why I was wondering why so many Muslim girls work so hard to become doctors.
