Work in Libya

Insha'Allah I plan to go to Libya this summer. I want to stay for at least two months with the possibility of staying longer. I'll be staying with my aunts and uncles while I'm there, but I don't want to be a simple house guest. So I was thinking about applying to teach English at a University or other institutions that teach English as a foreign language (I'm a certified middle/high school English teacher).

I know one lady who works at a college who could probably get me some info but I've been unsuccessful in contacting her. Does anyone know how I can get in touch with the University or other places? I tried searching the net but without the desired results. And how feasible is it for me to be able to get a job while visiting family for the first time? Is this totally 3ib? And am I dreaming if I think I could get a job in Libya this summer?

Feedback much appreciated.

It shouldn't be 3ib for you or your family. I know many of my friends in Libya who teach english at local institutes and private universities such as informatics. One thing that I don't advise is private tutoring unless you are a trained english instructor/teacher. I got offered 40 dollars an hour to teach at an institute but i passed on it because I am not trained as a teacher so I feel I would be doing more of a disservice to the Libyan population.

Hiya K

I recently was asked by this school in Ben Ashur, Tripoli (very nice, safe, expensive part of tripoli) if I would spread the word that they need foreign language teachers, and assistants with good english. I think this school from reading your profile may suit you. Its run by this amazing lady from Manchester, Britain who is married to a Libyan and seems to have lived in Libya for at least ten years or more, since she is muslim, and speaks very good arabic, and is very comfortable in Libya. I thought to post their details for you or anyone else who is thinking of spending time in Libya and wanting to learn more by working there. I really think its a good way to have a Gap year between school and university, or wanting time out in Libya:

Prinicipal of School: Alea Guhman (EFL/Specialist)

office: +218 21 3604565 (4pm-8:30pm)
email: [email protected]
website: alea-english.blogspot.com

Hope its helpful. As to idea of working being ayb, well its how you sell it to your family in Libya, and this place is run by women, they only have one male teacher, so its a good way of easing yourself into tripoli life, and getting comfortable, and I went to the school, and its very well run, friendly, warm, and I personally think they are decent & lovely from what I have seen so far. If you want more information, just email on my profile. Happy trails. :)

one other thing you could do is private tutoring....where you could accumulate your own curriculum and teach it, either to a group of people or to one person at a time. Discuss the feasibility of this with your family in libya, if they would have space for you to do your classes etc...and ask them to start getting the word out. When I was in Misratah two summers ago, about 5 of my cousins were enrolled in English classes taught by this British lady who was married to a libyan man and her daughter. My family suggested I do the same thing, but I was taking the summer off teaching :). Whatever you decided to do, you should bring your resources with you from the US, although libya is getting much better you will have many more choices here in N.America.

Thanks Fatima! My family is actually from Ghryan and I'd probably be staying in Tripoli...but if I go to Benghazi I'll be in touch :)

Speaking of private English schools, should I just wait until I'm there and hope I get a job? Or should I do something beforehand?

In the summer in Benghazi there are a lot of private english schools that open up. I had two cousins that attended them in the summer. If you're planning to stay just for the summer then I think it would be soooooo easy for you to get a summer job there. If youre planning for a long term plan then go to private schools......if your from benghazi I can hook u up :P, my great aunt runs a private school!! *wink wink*
