Would you be a donor?

When I was in pakistan i used to donate blood frequently. 5 years ago when i came here, i came to know that there is a 3-4 year waiting period for any people from Pakistan, before they can donate blood, so i chilled for 4 years.

Last year a very dear friend/elder sister (who happens to be very detailed in religion about who when where stuff) and I were discussing about blood donations.

She was not in favour of donating blood at all. Her point of view was that when i donate blood here, all the blood will go to cure the US soilders fighting in afghanistan and iraq, thus if i donate blood i am also participating in their cause to get better and go back to kill another muslim.

Out of respect i kept quiet, but this has ever since bothered me. Should we be so in-considerate that we would let another body die, just becase he/she is not muslim or not on our side. Can religion be over humanity.

If you were in that situation, Would you be a donor?

i am 100% in favor of it! what they need more though is platelets. my mom had to wait a week last year for blood and platelets before surgery because there was a nationwide shortage. (she had cancer)

arrack: thankyou, request noted. Surveys (this village) to me is also a means of research (some people might not agree). Where else would you be able to find, educated, energetic, responsive muslims with answers to discuss clarify the points/ambiguities in islam that tend to make it much harder that it is supposed to be.

they can't really do so, but most hospitals won't harvest organs over the objections of immediate family members due to possible legal liability. For the most part, it's a touchy area and despite the organ shortage and the fact that someone has an organ donor card, i've heard of cases where the organs were not harvested.

Mr. BagardhBilla: U seem like an educated individual. My request to you, that next time before quoting someone's else's opinion about religion/Islam, why not research yourself and give a more authentic reference!

organ donor...and blood, can't understand why anyone wouldn't (other than not being able to, or being squeamish).

I *am* a donor and this will not change (insha'Allah). If through catastrophe (blessing) I can save a life than alhamdulilah, I will do it regardless of what I might experience waiting in state... While I don't donate blood, how does your sister know that that soldier isn't muslim? How do you know that the opponents of said soldier aren't haribun, and thus the soldier is carrying out the wishes of God? What if the blood goes to darfur? To a child in Afghanistan? Your sister's opinion, while prima facia valid crumbles once one carries the concept a little further. With her line of reasoning a donation to the red crescent could go to, heaven forbid, an Ahmadi (sarcasm).. So we should not give blood at all... What happens if your sister is in an auto accident and bleeds out? your niece? your parents? I say that technology is a gift of Allah, and if we do our part to save a life, Allah may grant us some level of reciprocity. I see divine reciprocity every day, and so I can not possibly agree with your sister.

Totally agree with you Arrack and thanks for putting the state of medicine & science during the Prophet's life in perspective. I could not imagine a Hadith from the Prophet that would prohibit blood or organ donations, even to non-Muslims. Not all people converted thru the sword, but from love and respect.

I think this is misinterpretation of Islam. At the time of the Prophet Muhammad, medicine had not advanced to a level to facilitate blood donation or organ donation. In Islam we are supposed to help out other Muslims as well humanity in general. I dont think donating blood or any body organ is against the religion. I donate blood and am a registered organ donor as well.

I don't think donating blood should be an issue even according to the logic presented by the elder sister. According to her logic, we shouldn't pay taxes either because that paid for the war efforts. According to her, we shouldn't work in America because that supports the economy which in turn allows for more funds to be appropriated for the war. In fact, us just sitting in our homes doing nothing will still be supporting the war because we're choosing to live in a country that is causing the harm to Muslims, and Islamically, silence is a form of agreement. My point is that there are so many other things to worry about; we shouldn't split hairs over who the blood goes to.

Febe: I agree with you....Its so wrong for people to think twice before saving their lives because of their religion...how sad is that? If someone needs me to help them in any way to save their life, I would....

I would have to agree with Elmoe on this one :) I am a frequent donor and donate every few months or so and will continue donating no matter what. I believe in helping people and saving lives. So whatever it takes, I will do that. I am also an organ donor (it says it on my license). I hear its against Islam but honestly, that doesnt bother me. I will donate my organs to people who need it when I die. I am behing that 100%. Also, I donate plasma on regular basis because of my blood type. Hey I am all about the humanity ;)

i used to be a frequent blood donor,i just dont have time for it anymore...you dont know for whom they use this blood that you donate , it can be for a sick person...i have my personal reasons for donating blood plus its good for your health...thats a very ignorant comment to hear on how donating blood helps US soilders..then again they're entitled to their own opinion, no need to get bothered by it...do whats right and works for you...
