The X3 and X5, esp the X5, being made in america (may be a factor) are not as reliable as their german counterparts (most of the reast of the BMW's)....look at some of the consumer report stuff on reliability....

Actually I think the Cayenne S and for that matter the V8 Tourag drive better than the X5.
They are both over engineered.

I am going for the 3.0 as a lease option (my environmental friendly conscience) . I'll let the dealership pay for the maintenance and with a newer car it shouldn't be an issue..btw - how is the cayenne to drive ? I was thinking about it but figured if it's porsche it has to be a Boxter or better (not an suv)

The 4.4 x5 is going to run you loot on maintenance. I had one. When it wasn't in the shop the thing was great. Only suv I've driven except for the cayenne that could pull at 100 mph and still feel solid.

it depends on how long one plans to keep the car, if you change cars every 3 to 4 years then the $$$ come out more less same and one gets to drive a newer car and less hassle of maintenece , also the take over lease option works great as you don't have to pay any down and can negotiate monthly payments from seller directly

whats the advantage of leasing? i've never leased. always heard it's not financially efficient. just wondering...

thanks guys..I think I might just go with a lease option...you should check out swapalease.com or leasetrader.com. This is a site where you can take over someone else's lease, this will be my second car though the site and it works great.

there isn't really all that much maintence on a BMW.... pretty much just change the oil. but if something does go bad, prepare to shell out.

I suppose it might be worth evaluating leasing a new one as maintenance is covered for 3 yrs or 36k miles

You'll need to use synthetic oil ($$$) and many quarts of it. You will need to pour 93 octane fuel ($$$). And yes if you need body work, BMW shops charge more ($$$). All of this can be mitigated by you doing oil changes yourself etc etc. Not sure if you are interested in that but my husband loves working on cars.

BUT it's WELL WORTH it.

Myself, I am more of a sedan type person so I can really FEEL what a Beemer is known for.
