ZITS and red marks

salams,

sorry if this is a repeat topic...i have a problem.

i broke out with a few zits, went to a dermatologist (big mistake), they gave me a wash (brevoxyl), some drugs (doxycyclin) and cream (differin) to use... they said itll get worse before it gets better....

long story short. i broke out with gross acne and now i have red scars and still a lot of zits left over. i started Proactiv Solution and it is slowly helping get rid of the zits.

Do you guys recommend any zit zapper creams or washes (i heard DFF? face wash is good at Sephora and Benefit's Boo Boo stuff- some zit stuff)? Let me know what you use and where i can get it?

PLEASE HELP. MY SKIN IS DESTROYED and i need a (quick) fix.

Oh, and im going to look into peels when it all goes away, but meanwhile do you recommend any at home peels or masques that will get rid of the dry skin?

Thanks,
7ate6

An addition from my experience... well my acne scars were so gross when i was 13 that my sis named me 'Pepperoni'. MashAllah now I have pretty smooth skin and it is the feature I get complimented most on. I have made a few dietary changes since I was a pimply teenager and I think they must have had an effect (not sure which specific one did):

-Replaced all beverages with water
-Eliminated all ice cream and milk
-Try to make vegetables the focus of one meal every day (i am bad at this, but i try..)

An added benefit of this is easy weight loss. Instead of using expensive external products, try to make a + change in ur internal health and i guarantee your skin will reflect that ^_^

I would say stick to what your dermatologists advises. I am such a great patient :) Though it's always good to do your own research, reading first before seeing the doc so you are able to ask about things and probe more.

Plus! lots of water and running helps freshen up your skin. Blood circulation is sucha miracle cure for so many things. Again i would say running outside is a lot better than gym. The fresh air has its own effect.

Tea tree oil is a miracle worker!!! Just apply it using a q-tip and leave it on your skin overnight, if possible.

Proactive never worked foe me. I have been using body shop's tea tree line for the past one year and have never been happier (price is reasonable too). I occasionally break out at specific time in the month ;) don't we all, but other than that my skin has cleared up a lot. trust me, this is coming from someone who was very hesitant on having her pics taken casue of how bad her skin was.

Also microderm does help. I had 10 sessions, these helped smooth my skin a lot. It's now been over 3 months since my last session. Hope that helps :)

oh and as far as microdrem goes... i went to a spa for a consultation for something else and i started talking to the woman about the scars and she said i have to wait till all the zittocks are totally gone before i do that. and im still getting random ones here and there...

like i said, proactiv didnt work for me after 5 weeks...

tea tree oil is great too. i have the kiehls tea tree oil toner, but have been using DDF's glycolic 10% toner for now.

hey lubnah! yeah i know what you mean about the prices, but if it works for you then stick with it. my DDF 'Blemish' cleanser is lasting me a long while- its a foam and ive been using it twice daily for about 2 months and i still have 3/4 of left.

i think the key to proper Zittocks (as my 4 yo daughter calls them) Zapping is to use some sulphur based products... the proactiv sulfur masque, DDF's sulfur masque, even Clearasil's zit cream is made with sulfur. ok is it sulphur or sulfur?

786...I'm glad your issue is resolved...another good face wash is Peter Roth Thomas 3 % Gycolic wash...available at Sephora as well....i think its kinda crazy to pay 30 bucks for face wash...but i guess for good skin one will do it...a quick zapper for a pimple is the maria badescu sulphur solution (avail at sephora)..CVS has a cheaper version of it called bye bye blemish---works just as well...it helps dry out the pimple without irritating your skin like benzoyl and salycilic does...

a good way to get rid of acne scars is by getting a professional microdermabrasion....

dude go to nordtrom or sephora and go to the DDF (Drs dermatologic formula) and talk to them. depending on how bad it is get a cleanser-- i love the FOAMING blemish cleanser but there is also one that is Salycilic based (2%) and make sure you buy their SULFUR Masque (if this stuff doesnt work for you- you can always take it back- no questions asked)-- anyway i used the masque every night on the zits as spot treatment and they went away... try it. i hope this works for you.

ha. i cant believe you use CHICHING! nice. Senna rocks. Dr. Stuart brand teas makes this nice chai-- called LAX RELIEF. it works like a charm. not that i know;)

i was lookin at a popular acne product in pakistan (Safi), and the main ingredient is Senna (a laxative). So I guess pakistanis really think there's a connection between chiching and zits! although i don't know of any scientific study, in ayurveda and chinese medicine they believe that too. so make sure ur chiching regularly :)

the obagi system is really good. you only get it at md's offices. its expensive but you only use pea size amounts and it lasts 6 months.

wow. ok thanks for all the advice.

update:
the zits are pretty much gone -- proactiv didnt help in the long run. i heard that salacylic based products are better for brown people skin versus benzoyl peroxide based... so...

i started using DDF's blemish foaming wash (very nice) and their Sulfur Mask-- THIS IS A MIRACLE PRODUCT. I used it every night for a wk as a spot treatment and the zits were all gone in about 7 days. By gone i mean they were flattened and it took another wk or so to fully heal.

Now, i use the DDF Glycolic 10% Toner at night after I wash. I got a sample of their 2% hydroquinone fade cream and some other Esoterica fade cream at CVS (cheaper, has SPF, also 2%)-- apparently it takes time to actually fade the spots...

I was at Nordstrom and got a peel at the DDF counter-- it was fine, but i only used one treatment... Has anyone tried it for the full 7 days (the 7day kit by DDF)???

for those of you using proactiv...a few questions...
did you guys notice that after a few months of using it consistently, it kind of stopped working?
and also, i use the proactiv 3 step products, but in the mornings, can i apply my regular moisturizer over the repair lotion...i wasnt sure if that was ok, and i want to make sure im applying spf!

Just a suggestion...try using Quinoderm which is for Acne. It is available over the counter at any pharmacy. Eventually your scars will disappear too. I have tried it thats why I am recommending it. All you need to do when using the creme is to apply to the tip of your finger and gently rub into affected areas. Do remember to wash your hands before and after.

One important bit of information, and that is to use it at night only. Make sure you put an old towel on your pillow otherwise is will bleach your bed linen.

ive always had skin issues and i love my dermatologist and all and yes what he prescribed did work (i was on adoxa and benzaclin and glyquin for the scarring) but holy c r a p did it work so incredibly slowly.

i started using DDFs 10% benzoyl peroxide and sulfur cream a while ago and i love it, it dries up ur zits but at the same time it is very drying. its like 25 bucks at sephora. we just got the glycolic exfoliating wash and the sulfur mask from DDF yesterday and honestly (as corny as it sounds) i really do feel a difference. instead of just wasting 30 bucks on something that might work for you, u might as well ask sephora for a sample of it cuz theyll do that for u
