has added a new journalok admit it, you knew nothing about the city before you enrolled at wsu, but now, you've slowly fallen in love with it. besides those pesky potholes that never go away, the dilapitated old buildings that are begging to be torn down, the lack of any decent grocery stores in the area, and not being able to go anywhere alone at night (to just list a few) - detroit definetly has its own charm. what are some things that you've discovered about the city that have warmed your heart?
here are some:
campus martius park (sp?)
bellacinos subs :-)
traffic jam :-)
detroit festival of the arts
cass clinic

Detroit is amazing because equality reigns supreme...I have the same opportunity of getting gunned down in a drive-by as everyone else...be it Black, Chinese or Arab.danzig03

has added a new journalHi WSU people and everyone else...
I figure that writing in here would be a good way to vent my frustration and also hear what you (those damned to Michigan) have to say...
I'm on my way to Detroit :-( After a brief stint all over the States and a few more glamorous locales (well, more glamorous than Farmington Hills at least) I've managed to attain a position at Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center. Both a blessing and a curse, cuz Im desperate enuff to accept any spot I can get, but a curse in the sense it's Michigan.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not an ignorant canuck who's heard the horror stories...I've been and lived in Detroit for small fleeting glimpses at a time, and now I'm absolutely distraught at the prospoect of serving a 3 year bid there.
I have good friends in Farmington *cries like little baby* and some in Ann Arbor. I suppose my real question is WHAT DO I DO TO KEEP MY SANITY...I know it's a big city, and an even bigger State, but can some one please tell me what i can do from throwing myself in front of oncoming traffic on Highway 275.
Oh, and also, Is Farmington the best choice for me...most of my time will be at Detroit Recieving..should I live closer?
Anyone, please, ANYONE??? Is anyone out there???

oh yah, of course theres always birmingham or royal oak....nuralaain
farmington is a good 40-45 mins away i think... it depends if you want to live close to a masjid etc... some areas to consider: dearborn, rochester hills, troy, gross point, warren... to just name a few....nuralaain
hey salaams! im a second yr med student at wayne and thus spend most of time down there.... u know what, i moved here after i got married and wsu was basically my only choice for a med skool - but alhumdulilah, i am so happy i am here. I LOVE the diversity of the place, having so many muslims around, and being in a city that is truly calling out for help.... so much so that now im pretty strong in my conviction that im NOT going to succumb to cushy-suburbia private practice life, but stick to the city and try to help those that are desperate for our help.... i think you will grow to love the ppl of detroit as well. As far as living situation goes, farmington hills might not be ur first choice. I live in troy, right by somerset mall, and i take I-75 down every day. without traffic, it takes me about 25 mins, from apt to parking lot. i like the area bc if theres a problem with 75 i can access woodward and take that to the city. as far as stuff to do - the community is very active, including the young community. theres a lot to get your hands on, including a new charitable clinic that has just opened in detroit by muslims, IMPACT, a muslim community service group, CAMP-MI - a networking group for young professionals and a very active masjid close by. as far as the city, there are lots of fun things to do: tigers games, pistons games, tons of museums including the Detroit Institue of Art, the African AMerican museum, Henry Ford Museum, and Dearborns only 10 mins from detroit if ur in the mood for a good shwarma :-) if you have any other questions, just send me a message! detroit isnt that bad, give it a chance :-)Login to find out
