Organic Gardening 101: Everything You Need To Know
By glue8hailYou are ready to grow a healthy organic garden. Well your timing could not be more perfect! To follow is plenty of useful advice to get your organic garden underway. www.skidpro.com Dig small ditches between your rows of plants when you are creating an organic garden. Water will flow downward into the valley, where it can be absorbed more quickly by the plants' root systems. This saves water, which helps you save money and helps the environment.
Ensure your soil is health by adding mulch. The soil will be efficiently protected. It prevents soil temperature from getting too warm on hot, sunny days, which protects your plants' roots. It greatly reduces water loss, keeping the soil moist with fewer waterings. This also helps control the weeds.
Rotate where you plant each type of plant each year. For example, if you usually plant corn in one area of your garden and flowers in another, switch which plant is planted in each section. When plants of the same family are planted in the same spot year after year, it can encourage the growth of fungus and disease. These things can get into the ground, and attack plants the next year. If you mix things up, by planting in different spots, you will have enlisted a natural method of keeping fungus and diseases at bay.
You can create a garden for perennials easily. Simply use a spade to cut under the ground where you want to place your garden, flip it over and cover with wood chips. In a couple of weeks, plant your perennials in this new bed.
You have to decide what you want to grow in your organic garden. There are a variety of environments that certain vegetables and flowers thrive in to grow. Even with roses, the varieties available will mean that you may not be successful with any one type. Therefore, you need to be sure that the varieties you chose to plant, are most suited to the growing environment present in your garden.
A good spray to use on your organic garden is chives, onion, and garlic in water. You can make this organic spray by finely chopping chives, onions or peeled garlic, and adding them to half a cup of water. After steeping for a little while, strain the water into a spray bottle.
To get the most from your composting efforts, aim for a 1:1 ratio of dried materials and green plant products. Examples of green plant material are spent flowers, fruit and vegetable waste, grass clippings, weeds, and leaves. For the dry end of the spectrum, think of things like paper and cardboard, sawdust, hay, etc. Diseased plants, meat and fire-waste like charcoal or ashes should not be placed in your compost pile.
To mulch, trees and flowers, use a minimum of three inches of organic material. When you do this, you save money by conserving the amount of water you use, and it also helps out the environment in the process as well. You can grow to appreciate it as well.
A good way to plant seeds is in containers. Plant them three times as deep as their overall size. Certain seeds are an exception to that rule, since they require sunlight to germinate, so they should be barely covered or not at all. This is true of popular flowers like petunias and zinnias. If you are unsure about your seed's requirements for sunlight, the resources are often provided along with the seeds, or you can find out online.
Now, you shouldn't get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you'll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
