VERY interesting Rumi poem (X-Rated)

By sumnun

From the poetry of Rumi. (Mathnawi, V, 1333-1405)

There was a maidservant

who had cleverly trained a donkey

to perform the services of a man.

From the gourd,

she had carved a flanged device

to fit on the donkey's penis, to keep him

from going too far into her.

She had fashioned it just to the point

of her pleasure, and she greatly enjoyed

the arrangement, as often as she could.

She thrived, but the donkey was getting

a little thin and tired-looking.

The mistress began to investigate. One day

she peeked through a crack in the door

and saw the animal's marvelous member

and the delight of the girl

stretched under the donkey.

She said nothing. Later, she knocked on the door

and called the maid out on an errand,

a long and complicated errand.

I won't go into details.

The servant knew what was happening, though.

"Ah, my mistress," she though to herself,

"you should not send away the expert.

When you begin to work without full knowledge,

you risk your life. Your shame keeps you

from that to join with this donkey.

There's a trick you don't know!"

But the woman was too fascinated with her idea

to consider any danger. She led the donkey in

and closed the door, thinking, "With no one around

I can shout in my pleasure."

She was dizzy

with anticipation, her vagina glowing

and singing like a nightingale.

She arranged the chair under the donkey,

as she had seen the girl do. She raised her legs

and pulled him into her.

Her fire kindled more,

and the donkey politely pushed as she urged him to,

pushed through and into her intestines,

and without a word, she died.

The chair fell one way,

and she the other.

The room was smeared with blood.

Reader,

have you ever seen anyone martyred

for a donkey? Remember what the Quran says

about the torment of disgracing yourself.

Don't sacrifice your life to your animal-soul!

If you die of what that leads you to do,

you are just like this woman on the floor.

She is an image of immoderation.

Remember her,

and keep your balance.

The maidservant returns and says, "Yes, you saw

my pleasure, but you didn't see the gourd

that put a limit on it. You opened

your shop before a Master

taught you the craft."

last year my MSA invited a muslimah artist in to speak about her work.. she was really well studied, had a masters from some famous art school in Italy, studied domestically and abroad for quite some time.. her specialty was mosaics.. sculpture and tiles.. they were really beautiful, masha'Allah.. abstract, intricate and emotive. during the q&a part of the program, someone in the audience asked her, 'how can you claim this is self-expression when it is so restrained by your faith?' and she responded by saying, every part of a muslim's life is circumscribed by their faith, and just as in the practices of marriage, business, etc, self-expression also has modalities that a Muslim must submit to. my point: whether its rumi or eminem, a message can be good, but the way you drop verse should also be sculpted in an eman-conducive way. just my two cents.. not feelin your poem, sorry bro :)

I've read this before. It's an absolutely "whoa" inspiring piece with so much layered depth. Strive to attain as much knowledge before making a decision. It will save you the ills that ignorance brings.

For those with questions (or who like to debate) this is my interpretation of the meaning of this poem. Symbols:
Donkey - temptation/desire, not just in a sexual sense
Mistress/Woman - every human, man or woman
Maidservant - knowledge/wisdom, the upper brain
Mistress' death - punishment for sin (hell, note how painful it must have been)

Even though it is a donkey (and bestiality is obviously incorrect), let?s say for argument that the donkey is a tool of the maidservant?s. The mistress, by taking up with the "tool" (because she sees what pleasure it brings the maidservant), wants to experience that pleasure for herself. So by her taking up with the "tool" she is committing a wrong against the maidservant (potentially, against humanity), she is stealing the maidservant's pleasure. The mistress' death is punishment for her lack of control or thought in her overall actions. She is careless. The maidservant has the same basic desire as the mistress. However, not only does the maidservant not steal, but she carefully plans the correct way of having pleasure. She thinks of the possible harm that may come by seeking the pleasure, and comes up with a way to have it without sacrificing her mental or physical well being. She had a plan, put in the necessary work and has earned the benefits.

Like finding the right mate and marring, rather than, for instance, sleeping around and getting a disease etc. Like earning the income that it takes to live like J.Lo rather than pretending with credit cards and going bankrupt. Like earning political popularity/power rather than assuming the throne and facing the inevitable coup d'?tat that will end your life.

I believe the point is for all of us to realize that there are pleasures from life that are gifts from god. However, these gifts should not taken advantage of but be cherished and honored. Moral of the story is to not be simple minded, instead use the gift of reasoning, moral judgment and choice that we humans alone were granted.

i got the lesson! woo hooo ... i dunno what all the fuss is about .. isn't rumi known to be a bit scandalous (at least on the surface)? *shrug* i thought it came with the territory... khair, this is right up jawad's alley

Rumi included this in the Mathnawi along with all of his other spiritual teachings - including those sections where he comments on the Koran, tells the the narratives of some hadith, and stories of the masters of old, etc. There is ultimately a spiritual lesson that is not to be lost in the gross imagery. The message (which I'm sure wasn't lost on you) is the central point of all traditional learning - that before one embarks on anything one must find a master of that craft and submit to them. As for historical context and setting etc, Rumi was addressing a variety of people. I wouldn't doubt that this was said in front of many of his students who were hardcore fuqaha for the express purpose of "shocking" and "aweing" them. Allahu alim!

donkey style

anthropology, yes, you have internalized colonial sensibilities...whats next, you'll find the use of a lota to be beneath you? haha kidding. i love my lota.

So if it's only the English translators who thought this was lewd and put it in a separate collection, does this mean there was a different sense then of what counts as lewdness? i.e. a different profane/sacred type of distinction? I mean, was this originally in the same collection of poems as the more spiritual ones? And no one saw anything wrong with that? Or is it still funny/lewd then? I need more cultural-historical context! Is the fact that I am TOTALLY grossed out by the imagery mean that I've internalized colonial sensibilities?

now thats what i call going too far...in every sense...jawads gone too far, rumi went too far, and (pun intended) the donkey went too far...yes, there is a danger in going too far, sure, you can indulge in pleasures, within certain limits, if you step outside the bounds, well, i say, you deserve to get ass raped by a donkey. what is a flanged device anyways?

Ok well our fellow naseeber chrome seems to have put a poem up on his journal about farting and attributed to Mevlana Rumi and Ms. madcherry was wondering if my Rumi poem was BS ala chrome. To clarify the situation here's a little history lesson of the Mathawi of Rumi in English: When r.a. nicholson translated the Mathnawi originally into english he found many sections of the Mathnawi too lude for "polite english society" so what he did was translate those sections into LATIN so that only the refined and educated members of English society could read it. well Mr. Coleman Barks (who has 1) made his guzzilions as a "translator" of Rumi when 2) he doesn't know Persian to begin with and is therefore 3) NOT a Rumi translator but in fact 4) a re-writer of previous translations (Arberry, Nicholson, etc)) took these Latin bits and translated them into English and put them together in a book called "Delicious Laughter". The above selection was from that book and not from the book of farts that chrome so generously shared with us. Enjoy and remember to listen to your maidservants!

So you're saying bestiality is all good as long as you have someone to show you how?

sumnun (January 6, 2004 at 7:28pm)
ok before everyone thinks that i'm a zindiq let me say a few things about this one... actually forget it, this should be self evident. though a little racey and raunchy, you'll never forget the lesson!
