  • To Soothe Dutch-Muslim Nerves, Try a Jewish Mayor BY MARLISE SIMONS AMSTERDAM - Job Cohen is not just the mayor of Amsterdam, the brash and boisterous Dutch capital. He is also a calm, somewhat reserved Jewish intellectual who has made it his task to keep the peace between the city's Muslims and Christians. This is not how he originally imagined his role. Since Dutch mayors are named by the government, Mr. Cohen, a former civil servant and university chancellor, did not campaign for the job. Once he ... Read More

  • Who's your favorite superhero and why? Mine's Batman cause he was the first superhero to be just a human. To me that symbolized that we, as invidividuals, can be the best we can be and more if we put our mind to it. And he's a bad a$$!

    June 1, 2005 at 3:46pm
Batman is the best by far. No one else compare. Why, for the same reasons that XX said in the journal intro.

  • Jewels of Quran Isa bin Muhammad (Alaihir Rahmah) says that I once saw Abu Bakr bin Mujahid (Alaihir Rahmah) after his death in a dream reading the Holy Quran. I asked, "You have died, how are you reciting," upon which he said, "After every Salah and finishing of the Quran, I would pray "O Allah, give me the Taufiq to recite the Quran in my grave" and that is why I am praying." (Faizan-e-Sunnat) Ahadith The Holy Prophet said: 1) The best of you is he who learnt the Holy Qur... Read More

  • Ever met anyone who just makes your skin crawl, I mean you may be a fun-loving, sweetheart of a person who never hated anyone, and then you meet that one person who makes your blood boil...skin, literally, crawl, makes your stomache turn, basically....someone whose presence just PISSES you off... In the past few months I have met several people who have made me feel that way...maybe I am just old and irritable...naah, that can't be it...but anyway, there is this one person, from NASEEB, that just IRKS MY NERVES!

  • I have recently decided to go back to school to get my Masters in Education. My Bachelors degree was in English, so I hope to become a high-school English teacher. I have heard from some people that teaching high school students is a delight, and others have told me horror stories about it. Anyone who teaches high school, please feel free to share any of your stories of starting out as a high school teacher, how you felt, and what kind of experiences you had.

  • This could turn out to be a controversial question but I wanted to ask it from the 'full' kashmiris in this village. How is the idea of maintaining kashmiri roots by only marrying in kashmiri families sound to you? This idea has been in practice for quite a while but I believe it is under threat from the left-wingers. Should this practice be maintained or should the soul of our beloved 'Nani' be given some rest for good?

    May 12, 2005 at 10:24pm
my mom is the only one married outside 'kashmiri' - yes, that did bring about family feuds from quasi extended family - but sure 10 years later or so, all's smoothed out :)
    May 12, 2005 at 12:31am
